Bulgaria – Seasonal worker

Are you a non-EU citizen wishing to carry out seasonal work in Bulgaria? You can find information below on the conditions, procedures and rights you can enjoy during your stay.

Seasonal work between 90 days and 9 months

There is a specific scheme for seasonal workers in Bulgaria in compliance with the requirements of the Directive 2014/36/EU. You must obtain:

  • a work permit for seasonal worker;
  • a visa “type D”.

There is no need of work permit.

After your arrival your employer must register your employment at the Employment Agency’s relevant local Directorate “Employment Office”, where he is established.

Where and how to apply

You must first obtain an approval for the issuance of a Seasonal Worker’s Permit.

Before your arrival, your employer must apply for an approval for the issuance of a Seasonal Worker’s Permit at the central administration of the Employment Agency. A Seasonal Worker’s Permit is issued only for the approved specific economic sectors: HORECA (Tourism) and Agriculture.

The approval is given by the Employment Agency directly to the Migration Directorate of MoI and the employer is being informed.

Visa “type D”

Once your stay has been permitted, you should, if necessary, apply for a visa “type D” at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your home countrySearch for available translations of the preceding link. The visa gives you the right to enter Bulgaria.

Your employer must pay your travel from the place of origin to the place of work in the Republic of Bulgaria and your return trip.

The employer must provide you with suitable housing, meeting all health and safety standards, for the duration of your contract.

Residence permit

Once you have arrived in Bulgaria with your valid visa (in case you need a visa to enter the country), you must also obtain a residence permit from the Migration DirectorateSearch for available translations of the preceding link after you enter Bulgaria.

Documents required

To obtain a work permit, you must show:

  • application form;
  • education documents, or evidence of specific professional qualifications and experience corresponding to the objective requirements of the occupation;
  • travel and accommodation expenses and health insurance shall be covered by the employer;
  • evidence for stable, regular, providable and sufficient maintenance funds without referring to the social assistance system in the amount not lower than the minimal monthly work salary, the minimal stipendium or the minimal pension for the country, for the term of residence on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Duration of validity of permits

The Seasonal Worker’s Permit is valid for a maximum of 9 months.

Further requirements

After you arrive, you have five days to notify your address of residence to the competent authorities.
AppealsDecisions related to residence permits can be challenged before local administrative courts within 14 days.
 
Change of employmentA seasonal worker can change the employer after a permission from the Employment Agency without leaving the territory of Bulgaria.
